Canto XXIII - The Divine Comedy: Inferno, Gustave Doré, 1866

The circle of hypocrites. They wear very heavy habits which are golden in the outside and made of lead in the inside. Caiaphas, the high priest of the Temple of Jerusalem, who plotted the execution of Jesus, is crucified in this circle, but horizontally, so the hypocrites tread over him with their heavy robes, as they march in their endless infernal procession.
